About Purple Door
Purple Door Ice Cream is Milwaukee's super-premium, hand-crafted artisan ice cream
Purple Door Ice Cream is owned and operated by Lauren and Steve Schultz. Two educators for over 18 years combined, Lauren and Steve have taken their love for creativity, learning and forward thinking from the classroom to the kitchen. Both are passionate about creating a quality, delicious product while supporting the community and respecting the earth.
Lauren and Steve met in the fall of 2006. On their first date, Lauren told Steve about her childhood dream to someday open an ice cream business. Steve loved this idea and was the support and push needed to get the business going. The couple spent many nights and weekends making ice cream and creating flavors in their Bay View home kitchen.
In April of 2011, less than a year after having their first son, the Schultzes launched Purple Door Ice Cream. Purple Door began solely as a wholesale business, selling pints of ice cream to local grocers and large sized containers to area restaurants. Today, now with two children, Purple Door continues to offer ice cream to grocers and restaurants, as well as through catering and a retail location at 205 S 2nd Street in the historic Walker's point area of Milwaukee. At this location customers can find 20 flavors of ice cream for enjoying scoops, shakes, sundaes and more, as well as pints, ice cream sandwiches, ice cream pops and ice cream cakes in a display case for enjoying now and later.
Purple Door ice cream uses quality and local ingredients in the making of product. Purple Door's super-premium, 14% butterfat ice cream uses milk and cream from Wisconsin dairies (minus when there is a milk shortage). The flavor combinations span from "the classics" to "are you kidding me?". Flavor ingredients include top-of-the-line cocoas, liquers, coffee beans, teas, spices, and fresh and seasonal fruits. Lauren and Steve love creating new flavors and sourcing the best quality local ingredients for their ice cream because, "We love ice cream and want you to love our ice cream too!" Every batch of Purple Door ice cream is hand-crafted in small batches and taste-tested for balance, accuracy and depth.
Purple Door is committed to social and environmental responsibility through the making and sales of product. Purple Door's community initiative, Milk for Milwaukee, provides fresh milk to area homeless shelters. Purple Door also uses compostable spoons and cups at their retail location and promotes a recycle/reuse program with larger size containers provided to restaurants. Our retail location uses materials that reflect our environmental priorities, as well. The flooring in our retail shop is made of 72% recycled content (39% post-consumer, 33% pre-consumer)and is 100% recyclable. Not only that, this main flooring is a floating, click system that doesn’t require toxic adhesives. Even the walk-off carpeting in the foyer has a backing of 100% post-consumer recycled PET.
Perhaps the most interesting recycled material in our space is the hundreds of spoons that form a textural pattern on the fronts of the service counters. These spoons were collected from friends and family members throughout the world and bring a collective energy of support and kindness to our shop.
Ice cream is one of the simple pleasures in life. Please enjoy.
